Using Templates in Klaviyo
Edit, customize, and send your Grotto Slice templates in Klaviyo's drag-and-drop builder.
Finding Your Template in Klaviyo
After uploading from the Figma plugin or the Grotto Slice web app, your template appears in Klaviyo under Email Templates. You can also click the "Use in Klaviyo" button in the Figma plugin to navigate directly to Klaviyo's campaign section.
Editing in the Drag-and-Drop Builder
To edit your template with the visual builder, always open it from within a Campaign or a Flow - not directly from the Templates folder.
Update: you can now edit your templates in the drag-and-drop builder directly in the templates folder. Preview text of Grotto Slice templates can now be edited in Klaviyo.
Using in a Campaign
Create a new campaign
In Klaviyo, go to Campaigns and create a new email campaign. Choose your audience and enter a subject line.
Select your Grotto Slice template
On the template selection screen, find and select the template you uploaded. Click "Use template" to open it in the drag-and-drop builder.
Review your sections
Your template will display exactly as it looked in Figma - each sliced section as an image block, with alt text and link addresses already set. Set the subject line and preview text on the campaign itself (Klaviyo shows them side by side).
Editing Slices in Grotto Slice
If the smart slice didn't get it perfect on the first try - maybe it missed a button or you want a different section to have its own link - you can edit directly in Grotto Slice.
Open in editor
Click "Edit in Grotto Slice" from the Figma plugin, or go to your Email History and click "Open in Editor" on the template.
Adjust slice lines and links
With the horizontal line tool, click anywhere to add a new slice line, drag to reposition, or double-click to delete. Use the select tool to click on individual sections and change their link addresses.
Update the Klaviyo template
Click "Update Klaviyo Template" to push the changes. This replaces the existing template - no duplicates created.
Adding Your Universal Footer
Your uploaded template includes the footer as a single image section. To get a fully functional footer with clickable links, social icons, and unsubscribe links:
Delete the footer image block
In the Klaviyo drag-and-drop builder, find the footer image section at the bottom of your template and delete it.
Drop in your footer
Go to Universal Content in the Klaviyo sidebar and drag your saved footer into the template. With the updated Klaviyo template type, you can use either a native Universal Section (built from drag-and-drop blocks) or a single HTML block from the Footer Builder - both work inside Grotto Slice templates.
Now you have a ready-to-send email with a fully functional footer. This same process works for every template you upload - just delete the footer image and drop in your reusable footer.
Campaigns vs. Automated Flows
Grotto Slice templates work in both campaigns and automated flows. The drag-and-drop builder is the same in both - you get the full visual editor with all your uploaded sections. The best part is that since it's a native drag-and-drop template, you can add text blocks, Klaviyo variables (like a recipient's first name), product blocks, or any other Klaviyo content - just like any other template.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my template show raw HTML in the Klaviyo Templates folder?
This is normal. Klaviyo's Templates folder displays raw HTML code. To get the visual drag-and-drop editor, open your template from within a Campaign or Flow - not directly from the Templates list.
Can I edit the template after uploading?
Yes. Open the template from a Campaign or Flow to use the drag-and-drop builder. You can rearrange sections, add text blocks, insert Universal Blocks, and make any visual changes you need.
What happens if I upload a template with the same name?
Grotto Slice updates the existing template in Klaviyo instead of creating a duplicate. This makes it easy to iterate on designs without cluttering your templates folder.
Can I add Klaviyo variables to the template?
Yes. Once you open the template in the drag-and-drop builder, you can add text blocks with Klaviyo variables like first name, product recommendations, or any profile property - just like any other Klaviyo template.
Where do I find my uploaded template?
Templates appear in your Klaviyo account under Email Templates. You can also use the "Use in Klaviyo" button in the Figma plugin to go directly to Klaviyo's campaign section.
Can I use the template in automated flows?
Yes. Grotto Slice templates work in both campaigns and automated flows. The drag-and-drop builder works the same way in both - you get the full visual editor with all your uploaded sections.
